Undergrounding for Visual Amenity Scheme: Warton to Barrow Scout
October 13th, 2022
Undergrounding overhead wires is improving the visual amenity within designated landscapes.
Ofgem gives funding to the Electricity Northwest, and other Distribution Network Operators across the country, to pay for the undergrounding in AONBs and National Parks. The electricity poles and power lines are removed, and the power lines are replaced with underground cables.
Electricity Northwest has completed the ‘Warton to Barrow Scout’ scheme. 1600m of High Voltage (HV) overhead line has been removed from the fields and underground cables have been put beneath the New Road. The views from the New Road, the visual appearance of the area, has been improved. When the England Coast Path (Silverdale to Cleveleys) is open to the public, walkers will enjoy this visual appearance.
Undergrounding these overhead lines will also reduce the bird strikes in this area – bird deaths resulting from collision on power lines.
