Gait Barrows update
October 4th, 2017
A special edition of the Arnside & Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) e-newsletter focusing on Gait Barrows National Nature Reserve is out now.
The AONB’s only National Nature Reserve at Gait Barrows has recently said goodbye to former manager Rob Petley-Jones, welcoming Glen Swainson; and there are more changes planned on the ground in the coming months. The aim of these changes is to improve and expand the site’s distinctive habitats which support many rare plants, some of which are only found at Gait Barrows. With 3 million hectares of flower rich grassland lost in the UK since the 1930s (1.5 x the size of Wales!) – this is an important piece of work. We thought it was a good time to introduce Glen and some of the plans for the site, and to let you know how to find out more on one of Natural England’s open days scheduled in October.
We know how special Gait Barrows is to so many people, us included, so we wanted to work with Glen to explain some of the reasons for the planned changes and how we will see the NNR develop in the coming years. Find the newsletter here.
