transport: rail

Great for long distance travel, short hauls and in the case of the AONB it is great for getting back to the start of some great walks!

Fares are usually modest (particularly if you can book ahead or have a rail discount card) and there is a good number of services, links and connections available. Good planning is the secret of happy train travel and almost all rail operating companies now have a good reliability and punctuality record. We have, after all, only had trains running between Carnforth, Silverdale and Arnside since 1857!

By planning and booking ahead it is possible to travel very economically, the cost of the fare can be offset against all the other transport costs from using a car to make the same journey. Look out for special deals, promotions and discounts - often you can travel first class for less than a standard ticket and Group travel rates can be a good saving over standard fares. The Train really is a great way to travel to popular destinations - a must for visiting Manchester, London or Leeds from the AONB! Regular connections with main line routes mean that it is easy to get to the AONB from all parts of the UK rail network too.

Click the following links to look at rail travel information - the Trainline site - comprehensive travel information and ticket booking online for the national rail network. The train is the sustainable travel option to all kinds of air travel. It does almost go without saying that there is now broad agreement that air travel has a high environmental impact - which is growing rapidly and using air travel is a something to be avoided.
