Restoration of dry stone walls :
A programme of work was developed, following a survey of all the significant walls within the AONB. The survey applied objective criteria to establish which walls were priority for restoration. The programme has concentrated on those walls that are most significant in the landscape. They may be important stock-proof boundaries but more importantly they are historical and cultural features that form a very characteristic part of the Limestone landscape of this AONB. |

Many of the wallers working on the Project are local, although the volume of work generated by the walling programme has drawn in craftsmen and women from neighbouring areas too. The Project Officer has had the unenviable task of ensuring local styles and quality of building have been maintained even when we have had seven or more walling schemes in hand at any one time. |

The Project has completed many individual walling projects and we will acheive just short of six miles by the end of the current Project lifetime. As you travel around the AONB you will notice the extent of the walling programme - every part of the AONB area has benefitted from some works. The longest walls so far completed are the 800 metres over Thrang Brow and a similar length at Occupation Lane on Warton Crag. |
