Project Outline

The Limestone Heritage Project was a major heritage conservation scheme organised by the Arnside & Silverdale AONB Partnership to deliver a comprehensive works programme to restore, conserve and enhance the limestone heritage of the AONB and improve public access to and understanding of the environment of the area.

The Project, was organised as an area partnership scheme supported by the
Heritage Lottery Fund, Lancaster City Council, South Lakeland District Council, Cumbria County Council, Lancashire County Council, Natural England (formerly - The Countryside Agency and English Nature), The Arnside/Silverdale AONB Landscape Trust, The National Trust, The Wildlife Trusts of Cumbria and Lancashire, the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds and the Country Land and Business Association.

The Project was launched in the Winter of 2001, and came to a close early in 2007. The active element of the Project ended on 31st March 2007 although all involved are committed to ensuring the benefits of the Project endure for at least a further ten years. The AONB Service will be organising a series of interpretative events over the coming years to ensure the full value of the Project can be realised.

The Project was established with the following aims:-

  • Conserve the limestone features of the Arnside/Silverdale Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty
  • Promote access to the limestone heritage of the area
  • Preserve the art of countryside skills such as dry stone walling
  • Educate about the history of the landscape and the features contained within the AONB

To acheive these broad aims the Project consisted of four work programmes:-

  • Dry stone walling rebuilding
  • Lime kilns restorations
  • Ponds and Wells conservation
  • Access and Interpretation work
