Stunning limestone pavements, ancient woodlands, intimate orchards and meadows and an impressive coastline make Arnside & Silverdale National Landscape one of England's finest landscapes. The work of the National Landscape Partnership aims to conserve and enhance this extraordinary place now and for the future.
A Taste of the Landscape
June 18th, 2015
Arnside and Silverdale AONB is hosting ‘A Taste of the Landscape’; the area’s first local food and produce festival from 10-26 July, showcasing the finest local food, drink and produce. People from the whole area are invited to get involved!
The AONB is a small area, at just 75km2, but its unique landscape fosters the perfect conditions for the creation of a wealth of different products; from honey to apples; salt-marsh lamb to veggies; beef to berries (and lots of non-food products which we’ll be celebrating at the festival too!). The area is also home to some fantastic makers: brewers, bakers, millers, chefs and craftspeople. If you’d like to find out more about the range of produce created in the AONB, and how the landscape influences their creation, check out the new producer profiles on the Arnside and Silverdale AONB website. Everyone is invited to get involved by coming along to one of our (mostly free!) events, or trying for glory in our inaugural AONB Bake-Off competition at the Arnside WI on Thursday 16 July, with prizes awarded by our very own ‘Mary Berry’ – experienced WI cake judge, Dorrie Galbraith. Prizes have been kindly donated by the Heron Corn Mill in Beetham, Lakeland and Booths in Carnforth.
Just a few examples of the events on offer: Silverdale Local Food Festival will take place at the Gaskell Hall on Saturday 11 July, come along and sample the best in local produce: fresh fruit and veg, apple juice, preserves, locally reared meats, beers, jams, honey, chutneys, ice creams, dairy products, cheese, and doggie treats; there will also be a pulled pork cookery demonstration and chefs from RSPB Leighton Moss cooking mouthwatering burgers. Among many other events during the festival period: the AONB will be hosting a butterfly spotting ramble, taking in the flowers these important pollinators use for food, and finishing at the Old School Brewery in Warton, where ramblers can relax with a pint or a soft drink; a ramble to learn about the properties of herbs growing wild in the area and finishing at local cake emporium The Wolfhouse Kitchen, which serves Atkinson’s coffee; The Coppice Coop will be opening its yard for greenwood crafts demonstrations, a charcoal burn and some hands on workshops; Lancaster beekeepers will be hosting an open day at their apiary in Yealand. There are opportunities to find out about the food our feathered and four legged friends prefer too, on the RSPB Leighton Moss nature trail.
More information about the events taking place during the festival fortnight is available in the festival brochure, hard copies are available from the AONB offices and in local businesses, libraries and visitor information centres.
