A new male Peregrine, photographed here by Stan Parrott, has taken up residence at Warton Crag. The new arrival replaces the previous male Peregrine that was sadly killed in October when it collided with a vehicle. Hopefully the new pair will breed successfully on the Crag in 2011. Peregrine have successfully bred on the Crag for several years now, rearing two or three young most years. The Peregrine stay around during the winter, and can be seen frequently chasing wintering flocks of birds, such as waders out over Morecambe Bay, or Starlings as they come into roost. In April, when the Peregrine begin nest-building, a team of devoted local volunteers keep a watchful eye on the birds, through into July, to ensure they are not disturbed. If you would like more information about this, or become one of the volunteers for the Peregrine Watch, then please contact the AONB office. |
