The work to refurbish the Arnside Viaduct is now drawing to a conclusion. Work is well on schedule and trains will be running across the viaduct again on Monday 18th July. The Victorian structure has undergone a major investment project that will ensure the viaduct can continue to carry the track and trains across the Kent estuary for another 150 years or so. Arnside Viaduct was built in 1857 to carry the Furness Railway between Lancaster and Barrow and has been subject to major restoration work only once before, when the original iron supports were encased in brick built piers. Further information on the closure, trains and replacement bus services can be found on the South Lakeland District Council website |
