The Scotch Argus butterfly |
The limestone hill is one of the two high points in the AONB, at around 500 feet above sea level and is covered with species rich limestone grassland and mixed woodland. The site attracts a variety of insects and is especially renowned for butterflies. There are outstanding views from the summit to the Lake District and Morecambe Bay. Look out for the Scotch Argus, dusky black with red border spots, and the High Brown Fritillary, big, bold and fast flying. The Scotch Argus abounds on the top of the Knott during the end of July and the beginning of August. You'll find it bumbling about in the blue moor grass and if you see one, you're sure to see many. There are a number of other National Trust properties in the AONB - click on the links above to explore more or check on the National Trust's website to explore them all. |
