Walking

Walking is probably the best way to explore the AONB; go quietly and you will see birds, mammals, perhaps even the occasional reptile and plenty of insects.

The limestone, coastal and woodland scenery provide a stunning backdrop come rain or shine and whether you are looking for walks with children or something a bit more strenuous, it is all here waiting.

  • The Heritage Trail provides self-guided walks to the sites restored during the Limestone Heritage Project.
  • "Clints and Grykes" takes you around Gait Barrows NNR looking specifically at the Limestone features
  • Easy Access Walks highlights 12 routes that are wheelchair/pushchair friendly
  • Visit Bittern is a handy leaflet with a map of public paths in the AONB and places to visit

Suggested routes

The AONB Unit produces a range of leaflets to help both visitors and locals get the most out a countryside walk in the AONB.

We have been publishing walking guides to the area for many years. Some of the routes are designed to be used in conjunction with the Train Service, on the Barrow - Lancaster line that cuts through the AONB. This allows some really good linear walks in the AONB that aren't possible if you have to get back to your starting point in a car park.

You can pick up a copy of most of the walks leaflets free of charge from the AONB Office, or drop us an email or phone call to get copies sent to you by post. As part of the further development of the new AONB website we will be offering walks leaflets to download in the near future. The Visit Bittern leaflet shows all the walking routes in the AONB as well as information about where to eat and places to visit.
