AONB Partnership

Co-ordination is needed to tackle the many pressures which act on the AONB.

That co-ordination is provided by the AONB Partnership, which is made up of local authorities, interest groups, national agencies, local communities and voluntary sector organisations who work together to conserve and enhance the area. The management of the AONB is the responsibility of the AONB Executive Committee which is made up of representatives of the relevant bodies.

The main funding partners of the Arnside and Silverdale AONB are Defra and the four local authorities with responsibilities for the AONB area, Lancashire and Cumbria County Councils, Lancaster City Council and South Lakeland District Council. The six Parish Councils of the AONB also contribute funding for the work carried out by the Unit. Lancaster City Council acts as the 'host authority' for the AONB Partnership.

Executive Committee

As well as helping the four principal local authorities act in a more co-ordinated manner on matters affecting the AONB, the full Executive Committee, which meets twice a year, is responsible for the oversight and direction of the AONB Unit.

The Committee is assisted in this task by the Technical Officers Group. Whilst the majority of the funding for the AONB comes from the local authorities and Natural England, there are many other bodies and groups involved in working together to protect the area and helping to implement to AONB Management Plan, and all of these partners are represented on the Executive.

As well as elected members appointed by the principal authorities, the Executive has representation from all six parish councils in the AONB along with members drawn from conservation bodies, Land-owner and Farming groups, voluntary groups, local businesses and recreational users groups.
