Heron Corn Mill - hydro-electric turbine

During 2009/10 Heron Corn Mill installed a 100kw Kaplan propeller-type hydropower turbine at their site in Beetham. This innovative and exciting addition provides green energy for the entire complex, with any surplus electricity being sold back to the National Grid. The project highlights the Mill's primary resource - the river - and the reason why water-powered industry has been on the site for centuries.

Grant awarded £25,000

Arnside Educational Institute - Solar PV panels

A study into energy saving and renewable techologies suitable for the building on Church Hill, Arnside looked at loft insulation, double glazing, thermostat controlled radiators and energy efficient light bulbs as well as solar thermal panels, building-mounted turbines and solar photovoltaic panels. In addition to the many energy efficiency measures implemented, the decision was taken to install Solar PV panels as this particular technology was identified as having the potential to contribute approximately 20% of the AEI's annual electricity bill.

Grant awarded £9,500

Ashleigh Court Residents - Community Carbon Footprint Reduction Project

Ashleigh Court consists of 32 apartments providing accommodation with care line and emergency systems installed for elderly people. The building is serviced entirely by electricity for heating and lighting purposes and it is provided with a number of communal lounges and a network of corridors and staircases where lighting is required continuously throughout the day and night. Residents came together to look at their carbon footprint and to investigate ways in which it could be reduced. The SDF grant was awarded to assist with the installation of corridor and stairwell energy-saving lighting.

Grant awarded  £1,000

RSPB - Biomass Boiler

RSPB Leighton Moss visitor centre is located in Silverdale. Open 7 days a week and attracting 100,000 visitors a year, it is part of a nature reserve, offering educational, cafe and shop facilities. Following the recommendations of a feasibility study, a biofuel woodchip boiler was installed with a view to reducing the carbon footprint of the centre and to advocate renewable energy to the centre's visitors.

Grant awarded  £12,500

Leeds Children's Holiday Camp - Aquarius Titanium Heat Pump

The trustees have been looking at ways of reducing energy consumption within the main building and swimmimg pool at their site in Silverdale. In addition to replacing the original heating system and installing double glazing, they have purchased and installed a heat pump for the swimmimg pool. The heat pump does not produce any smells, fumes or greenhouse gases, and the amount of energy used to run the pump is very small in comparison with the previous system. The trustees are keen to promote their work to help raise awareness of environmental issues to all those who use the facilities.

Grant awarded  £4,610

Carnforth High School - Solar PV panels

The school has been awarded Silver Status by Eco Schools for the care and education of their environment, with pupils working on 4 key areas of Litter & Recycling, Water & Energy, Transport and Exercise & School Grounds.

To reinforce this, the school constructed a 4kWp solar cell array on the southern roof of the main building. Whilst generating electricity for the school, the project also forms an integral part of the school curriculum, thereby promoting alternative forms of energy and a more sustainable lifestyle to pupils of both Carnforth High and the feeder primary schools, their parents, staff and the wider community.
